Removing chewing gum in schools

The chewing gum issue

A nightmare for School Cleaners and Business Managers!

Removal of gum in schools is very costly to remove involving the use of external contractors or significant additional in-house labour.

Sometimes it is just too hard to do anything about. School cleaners have limited time to get all their cleaning done. This often means gum removal is made part of periodical cleaning in school holidays.

However this doesn’t always mean it happens. Budget restrictions, or a lack of the right equipment, can mean that sometimes gum is never attended to.

Case Study

Willetton Senior High School is a large Public Sector school in Perth. The school is large, with over 200 students and a large group of school cleaners employed to manage routine and periodical cleaning tasks.

There are buildings and concrete and paved surfaces of various ages in the school.

Chewing gum had been a significant issue for the cleaning staff at Willetton SHS. Gum removal was left to the periodical cleans in holidays, when they would tackle it with a 2000psi cold water pressure cleaner.

The cold water pressure cleaner was extremely slow and on older pieces of gum that had been down for several years it was completely ineffective.

Having contractors come in with hot water pressure cleaners was expensive and unsustainable for the school as an ongoing solution.

To remove the gum from entrance matting was very difficult with staff using hot water and scrubbing brushes. This was very labour intensive and produced poor results.

A better gum removal solution was required.

A Faster way to eliminate Chewing Gum in schools

Then they met the i-gum.

The i-gum has been designed to solve many common challenges of traditional approaches to chewing gum removal. I-gum removes gum from carpets, concrete and pavers.

In fact, the i-gum removes gum from virtually any surface.

We took along the i-gum to the Willetton SHS and tried it out with David Gochez, the Head Cleaner.

David has led the cleaning time at Willetton SHS for many years. He has seen and tested a wide range of solutions to improve cleaning processes.

David took the i-gum straight to some of the oldest areas of the school, where gum had been for 10 years and more.

It was amazing to see the results that could be achieved.
